COVID-19 UPDATE FROM DR. JONES – 10/15/20

Dear Patient:

I hope this finds you well. Currently there are 23 persons hospitalized at NCH with COVID and we have treated 1177 people in the hospital successfully since the beginning of the pandemic.  The WHO has recently estimated that 10% of the world’s population has been infected.


Vaccines: A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease. There are several different “biological preparations” being actively investigated to provide the active immune response to Coronavirus. 4 different vaccines are end-stage for clinical trials at this time. Two vaccines use messenger RNA to stimulate a response while the latter two use RNA that is transmitted on an adenovirus.

Johnson & Johnson pauses coronavirus vaccine trials due to “unexplained illness” in participant

The Wall Street Journal (10/13, Loftus, Subscription Publication) reports Johnson & Johnson has paused clinical trials of its coronavirus vaccine, but hopes to know soon whether it can resume the trials

US mortality is up this year, largely due to COVID-19

The US recorded more than 1.3 million deaths from March 1 to Aug. 1, 20% more than would normally be expected during that period, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. COVID-19 was listed as the cause for 67% of the excess deaths, and the highest per capita rates of excess fatalities were reported in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
